Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)

Education and research are priorities of the German Federal Government and the majority of the federal research budget is managed by the BMBF. The focus in research is (1) to sustain research infrastructures at the institutes within the large science organisations in Germany and (2) to fund projects for innovative research in various sectors, e.g. in transport and space research, chemistry and materials science, information and communications technologies, nanotechnology, life sciences including biotechnology and health research as well as sustainable development. In the context of demographic changes, Life Sciences and Health Research have attained further attention.

There are still considerable knowledge gaps about the causes of many diseases and the possibilities for therapy. A great challenge in health research is the transfer of scientific insights gained in the laboratory to applications which benefit the individual patient and the health care system. At the same time, modern technologies yield results and insights which were unattainable only a few years ago. This opens new opportunities for medical developments and innovations result in new diagnostics, therapies and medical products. To support these developments in translational science, i.e. advancing basic research to preclinical and clinical research, is a central interest of Health Research of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).
