The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig (HZI)
The centre belongs to the Helmholtz Association, the biggest research organisation in Germany. In the centre approximately 250 scientists lay the foundations for new diagnostic procedures, medicines and active agents using in-vitro, in-vivo and in-silico approaches - with which infectious diseases can be better healed or more effectively prevented. Epothilone, the active agent in a new cancer drug, is the most recent prove of the successful translational work at the HZI. Together with Bristol-Myers Squibb the drug was developed and launched in the US in 2007, European launch is expected in 2008.
The HZI has recently established together with the Medical University Hanover (MHH) a Centre for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research called Twincore. There basic researchers and clinicians closely work together under one roof. MHH and HZI initiated the development of a concept for such a translational research environment in 2004. The experience gained during the process of designing the infrastructure and the identification of funding sources will be used during the EATRIS project.
