The  Heart Science Center

Cardiovascular research extends from basic to clinical and from cardiac science to public health. Through this extensive research effort there is the opportunity to lessen the impact of cardiovascular disease in today’s society and to protect the health of generations to come.

The Heart Science Centre, headed by Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub and Professor Nadia Rosenthal, is a research facility founded on close collaboration between Imperial College London, The Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust, and the Magdi Yacoub Institute. Academic and research staff at the Centre are employees of Imperial College London, along with clinical and research staff from the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust.  Our research is founded on the belief that advances in clinical practice depend on understanding the fundamental biology of the heart, at developmental, physiological and pathological levels. Understanding these essentials can lead to the development of new strategies of regenerative medicine.

Imperial College was founded in 1907, and the Faculty of Medicine in 1997. The College is ranked amongst the top universities in the world and the Faculty is one of Europe's largest medical institutions both in terms of its staff and student population and its research income. The Faculty of Medicine’s research strategy has several aims, including creating synergy between Imperial’s strengths in science, medicine, technology and business, supporting and sustaining research of the highest calibre and value, catalysing the translation of research into advances in clinical practice, strengthening the culture of national and international collaboration, training future generations of medical scientists and fostering a close partnership between Imperial College and the UK National Health Service. Translational cardiovascular research is a key part of this strategy.
